Bounds of Expression (2026) explores the dynamic relationship between gender and expression, and uses photography as a means of representing queer people in order to challenge the gender binary. When people live outside of the binary, it reveals the fluidity and flexibility of gender, threatening the patriarchal system, which is the root of gender-based discrimination. Sylver Green is the subject in this body of work, a close friend of the artist - they have known each other for over 10 years - the comfort between photographer and subject is an important part of the work.
Bounds of Expression uses the technique of photo-joiners, in which multiple photos of a person are joined together to create a cohesive portrait. The photographs come to life by hanging in front of each other and allowing the viewer to move through and around the works. The pictures swing, overlap, and cut the subjects body, clothing, jewelry and background into multiple parts. The fragmentation of the final image through photo-joining alludes to the multi-faceted identity of trans people and moves the portrait through time and space. The project seeks to remind us that there is no singular way of existing, only infinite possibilities of being and becoming.
